AEL Airborne carried out the design, tooling and manufacture for the blades for Tidal Generation Limited’s 500kW Deepgen tidal stream turbine. AEL were also responsible for the design and test of the patented blade root design which enhances the structural reliability of the blade turbine interface during the typical 20-25 year life required of tidal and wind turbine blades.
The AEL Airborne blades were installed and the Deepgen turbine was successfully deployed and connected to the grid at the European Marine Energy Centre’s (EMEC) tidal test site at the Fall of Warness in the Orkneys in September 2010. In March 2012, TGL announced that the device had generated and delivered over 200MWh into the UK grid since installation.
TGL was later sold to Rolls Royce, then Alstom.
